Silicon (Si) is besides oxygen the most common element and exists in the form of sand, bricks, glass etc. It is omnipresent in soil and water. Yet little is available for your plants. The availability depends among other things on the type of soil, pH value and water management.

Although silicon was not seen as an essential element in the past, research has shown that it has a positive effect.

Higher resistance = stronger plants

With sufficient absorption of silicon, the phosphate uptake improves, the root system develops better, the resistance to disease increases and plants become less sensitive to abiotic stresses such as heat or drought. Silicon strengthens the cell walls and thus ensures significantly stronger plants.

30% higher yield

During a study on the growth of strawberries, 30% more yield was found after fertilization with silicon. A positive effect of silicon on the yield has also been observed for other vegetables, potatoes, grasses and grains. Sufficient available silicon in the soil provides a stronger plant and can reduce disease pressure. Especially in stress conditions (drought, disease) Silicium is of added value.

Fertilization advice

On the market you can find specific mineral silicium fertilizers and fertilizers in which silicon is an ancillary component. Examples of mineral fertilizers are:

  • Stone meal (SiO2 39%, CaO 14%);
  • Silica,
  • Potassium and calcium silicate;
  • Dissolved silicic acid;
  • Lime fertilizer.

Several studies show that limestone fertilizers with silicon, such as Silic Boost from Atami, lead to a higher yield compared to normal lime fertilizers.
